The cheongsam or qipao - 旗袍(qí páo), a traditional Chinese women's dress, had first appeared in China in the 1920s.
Now, they may be going slightly out of fashion, being overtaken by Western designs and brands, but one of the most alluring things about Asian culture, besides food, are arguably women's traditional dresses. You may have seen them on the silver screen over the years – these body-hugging garments which seem to romanticize the elegant forms of their owner. Two of the most famous are the Cheongsam from China and the Ao Dai from Vietnam. Let's take a look.
