Grammar - Do you really know how to use “要yào”?

要(yào) is a very common word that we used in daily life, but do you really know the meanings of it? Let's see with us.

要yào(1)- to want

Can be used after “想 xiǎnɡ (to want)”, to indicate a stronger intention.

Negative Form:

Instead of using “不要(bú yào)”, we need to use“不想(bù xiǎnɡ)”or “不愿意(bú yuànyì)”.

E.g: 

Wǒ yào mǎi xīn yīfu. 

我要买新衣服。

(I want to buy new clothes.)

Wǒ xiǎnɡ yào chī miàntiáo.

我想要吃面条。

(I want to eat noodles.)

Negative Form:

E.g: 

Tā bùxiǎnɡ jiàn nǐ.

他不想见你。

(He doesn't want to see you.)

Wǒ bùxiǎnɡ chī miànbāo.

我不想吃面包。

(I don't want to eat bread.)

要yào(2)- 要+Verb - should, need 

Mostly used to order, remind or persuade somebody, etc. 

Negative Form: 

“不要(búyào)”or“别(bié)”

E.g: 

Nǐ shì xuéshenɡ, yào hǎohāo xuéxí.

你是学生,要好好学习。

(You are a student, you should study hard.)

Kǎoshì de shíhou yào rènzhēn jiǎnchá. 

考试的时候要认真检查。

(Look over the exam paper carefully before handing them in.)

Negative form:

E.g:

Qǐnɡ dàjiā mínɡtiān kāihuì búyào chídào.

请大家明天开会不要/别迟到。

(Please don't be late for the meeting tomorrow.)

Nǐ bié bǎ zhè jiàn shì shuō chūqu.

你别把这件事说出去。

(Don't tell others about it.)

要yào(3)- 要……的

Estimation of possible adverse events in the future. Normally used with“的(de)”.

E.g: 

Nǐ chuān zhè me shǎo , yào ɡǎn mào de.

你穿这么少,要感冒的。

You are wearing so little that you will catch a cold.

Nǐ xiànzài chī nàme shǎo,děnɡ yī xià yào è de. 

你现在吃那么少,等一下要饿的。

You're eating so little now that you'll be hungry later.

要yào(4)- 要……了

To Indicate something is happening soon,can be used with“快(kuài)”or“就(jiù)”.

E.g: 

Yào xià yǔ le.

要下雨了。

Kuài yào xià yǔ le.

快要下雨了。

Jiù yào xià yǔ le.

就要下雨了。

①②③:It's going to rain.

Wǒ kuài yào xià bān le 。 

我快要下班了。

(I'm about to leave work.)

要yào(5)- will; be going to

E.g: 

Wǒ mínɡtiān yào qù lǚyóu.

我明天要去旅游。

(I am going to travel tomorrow.)

Jīntiān wǎnshɑnɡ nǐ yào zuò shénme?

今天晚上你要做什么?

(What are you doing tonight?)

要 yào(6)- 总要zǒnɡ yào,都要dōu yào - 

Indicating regular movements.

Commonly used with“每měi(every)”,“往往wǎnɡ wǎnɡ (often,frequently)”,with" 都 dō u(all)"and"总 zǒnɡ (always)"in front.

E.g: 

Tā měicì cónɡ wàidì huílái,zǒnɡ yào lái wǒ jiā wán.

他每次从外地回来,总要来我家玩。

(Every time he comes back from other places, he always comes to my home.)

Xiàbān yǐhòu tā wǎnɡwǎnɡ dōu yào qù dǎ lánqiú.

下班以后他往往都要去打篮球。

(He often goes to play basketball after work.)
